The best
adjective to describe Maurizio Berti is probably cosmopolitan. Born from
Italian parents, his childhood was spent between Torrington and Hartford
Connecticut, hence an American education with an Italian Cultural imprint. An early
passion for travel along with an interest in history and anthropology as an
instrument to comprehend the world, brought Maurizio to choose the School
of International Studies at the University of Denver for his ideal higher
learning institute. During his junior year abroad at Schiller College in
Strasbourg, France with an internship at the European Parliament, a love story
began with wine and French cuisine. The transformation from beer drinker to
quality French wines was almost immediate. It took a glass of Chateaux Lafite
vintage 1974, a Pauillac with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot, a ripened
Saint Albray cheese, daubed with butter on a fresh baguette, and the world was
no longer the same.
After graduating from college in Denver, a short parenthesis at the University of Texas in Austin with post-graduate studies in Business Administration and International Finance completed his studies.
Then fate took its toll. Taking
Marcus Aurelius’ words by the letter “Accept the things to which fate binds you and love
the people with whom fate brings you together but do so with all your heart”
Maurizio moved to Italy on the shores of Lake Garda near Verona and took over
the family business. Fate works in strange ways and after closing the
family business in 2010 he decided to dedicate his time to his first love, wine. This
time the passion expanded into Italian wines.
